While Star Wars fans anxiously await the opening of Star Wars Land Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World is adding more and more new Star Wars fun that can be enjoyed RIGHT NOW! This includes meeting beloved (or hated) Star Wars characters, viewing replica props and artifacts from Star Wars films, and our personal favorite- trading with the Jawa! All this can be found at the new Star Wars Launch Bay which is located in the old Art of Animation building. The Jawa are scavengers and can be particular about what they will and will not trade. Here are our tips for successfully trading with the Jawa! I will also include a video of our little man’s trade- he was beyond excited.
The Jawas work in a pair and mosey around a dark (hence the bad iphone pics) Cantina themed area. There is even Bantha milk on the countertop!
The Jawas are located just passed the character meets on the upper level. So if you exit the launch bay theatre and continue down the hall bypassing the downstairs character meets you will end up right in the Cantina area. If the Jawas are not present they are probably just taking a Bantha Milk break and will be back shortly- being a scavenger is hard work!
The Jawa are very independent and seem to choose on their own who they would like to initiate a trade with. Lines don’t form– it’s more of a follow them around and hope they pick you situation. Each child we saw (and a couple adults!) that wanted to trade eventually had the opportunity. Just be persistant- these guys move around quick!
So it may take a couple minutes for the Jawa to notice your child but this area is really neat and the experience is well worth it. When we visited most guests were speed walking through this area on the way to their next destination and didn’t even notice the Jawas so the crowd was very light. Bonus!
No photopass photographer is present so if you want to capture this experience have a good camera handy because it’s really dark! I was traveling light on this particular day and only had my iphone- resulting in usable but grainy images.
What can and can’t be traded with Jawas!?
- No Trash! Many guests are caught off-guard and attempt to trade whatever they have handy… Jawas do not view trash as a good trade. They prefer shiny things 😉
- No Money– while they do like shiny things they are not allowed to trade coins or money of any other kind per Disney rules I’m sure.
- No Pins– at least not on our visit. The family in front of us tried to trade a Disney pin and the handler informed them that the Jawas do not trade pins. However, i have heard other people say they have traded pins with Jawas at Star Wars Launch Bay so it may be a new change or dependent on the Jawas/handler for the day.
- Park Maps and pens/pencils- Jawas will occasionally trade these things (they can be picky) but you will likely get a similar item in return, like someone else’s park map.
Really anything you have on hand can be traded if the Jawa is so inclined… if he doesn’t like what you have offered he will reject it or take it and walk away! Haha!
We were planning on trading one of our pins but when the family in front of us couldn’t trade that we scrambled for a plan b! I opened up one of our extra glow sticks from The Dollar Tree and handed it to the little man. I am assuming from the head shaking that the Jawa wasn’t overly impressed but after some serious digging he came up with a Droid piece. Our little man was so happy! We call that a good trade 🙂
Have you ever traded with the Jawas? What did you get? Let me know in the comments below!
